I’ve had several people inquire about the use of caffeine in Shakeology and if that is why it gives me so much energy? My answer, in short, is no. The energy I get from Shakeology is sustainable and natural. The sources of caffeine in Shakeology are all-natural and in low levels (if any at all). Here is some information on this topic straight from Beachbody headquarters:
CHOCOLATE & GREENBERRY SHAKEOLOGY: The green tea extract used in Shakeology Chocolate and Greenberry has had the caffeine removed. However the cocoa found in Chocolate Shakeology does contain some caffeine. Testing shows that Chocolate Shakeology has approximately 18 mg of caffeine. This is much less than a cup of regular coffee at 75-100mg and a little more than a cup of decaf coffee which can vary between 2-15mg of caffeine. Greenberry has been tested to show 0g of caffeine.
CHOCOLATE VEGAN & TROPICAL STRAWBERRY SHAKEOLOGY: In our mission to use whole ingredients (not extracts) in our vegan formulations, a whole leaf, all-natural green tea and cacao (in Chocolate Vegan only) are used. Therefore both vegan formulations contain low levels of naturally-occurring caffeine.
The removal of caffeine from Shakeology involves no chemicals, irradiation or genetic modification whatsoever. The non-GMO green tea ingredient (found in Greenberry and Chocolate Superfood) is decaffeinated via a water process before it is added to the formula. This is a chemical-free aqueous, molecular distillation process for clean EGCG purification and extraction. Because this extract EGCG Green tea is so minimally processed, it provides the most antioxidant polyphenols, notably a catechin called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which is believed to be responsible for most of the health benefits linked to green tea.
It’s important to note that the caffeine present in Chocolate Shakeology resides naturally in the Cacao and is not removed by any means so that formula does contain caffeine. For Tropical Strawberry Shakeology, our mission is to use only whole ingredients (not extracts) therefore a whole leaf, all-natural green tea is used in this formulation. This green tea naturally contains low levels of caffeine and as a result, Tropical Strawberry is not 100% caffeine-free.
