I had a bag full of Granny Smith apples that I needed to use up from a Bountiful Basket last weekend, but had no idea what to do with them (aside from pie, of which I’m not a fan). After a quick search on my best friend Pinterest, I found this recipe for Crispy Baked Apple Chips on Snacker’s Delight blog and thought “Voila!” I made a few substitutions along the way, and the end result was delicious and guilt-free.
Preheat the oven to 225 degrees.Grab your bunch of apples. Organic Gala, Honey crisp, and Fuji apples were recommended for the original recipe. I had Granny Smith, so that is what I used.
Before slicing up the apples, make an acidulated water bath for your apple slices by filling the bowl with water and the juice of half of a lemon. I didn’t have lemons, so I used an orange as a replacement.
Wash and dry your apples. Slice the apples into paper thin slices. I used a sharp kitchen knife to do this job. The core bakes just fine, and the seeds will fall out as you slice. Look at this beauty. There is something so cool about the “star” in the center of an apple.
When your slices build up drop them into the bowl of acidulated water. This process will keep the apple slices from browning due to air exposure.
Mix together the sweetener and cinnamon in a small bowl and set it aside. The original recipe called for Splenda. I swapped the Splenda out with truvia. In a perfect world, I would have used pure stevia.
Meanwhile, remove the slices from the water bath and place in a single layer on paper towels. Pat them dry and transfer them to the cookie sheet lined with wax paper or a silpat sheet. Grab your bowl of cinnamon and truvia and sprinkle those delightful apple slices with the sweet yumminess.
Place the baking sheet in the center of the oven. Bake at 225 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Check for crispness at 30 minutes, lift the crisp from the sheet, turn them over, and return to the oven for another five-ten minutes. Remove from oven (they will crisp up more once removed from the oven). The cook time really depends on how thin you are able to get your slices. I had to cook mine a little longer than 40 minutes (must not have made them thin enough).
Once crispy, remove the apple slices from the sheet and serve. One apple equals one serving. Apples are low in calories and very nutritious. IF there are any chips leftover, store in a Ziploc bag. ENJOY!!!
